In quarantine, it’s been challenging to find ways to stay busy, stay connected and stay sane. But fortunately, the roads aren’t closed and there’s plenty of them to drive. I had the chance to take a cruise in the Mazda CX-9 and packed the family on a little road trip to Temecula to see the vineyards and the beautiful high desert scenery.

Everyone in the family is an adult, so this vehicle was perfect for grown-up comfort. The CX-9 is spacious, comfortable, luxurious and has a smooth ride. Plus, it’s set at a pretty decent price and averages 23 miles per gallon. These are a few of my favorite things.

Space & Comfort – Being the driver of a large party of friends or family means having a vehicle that makes sense. Again, the space was great. Surprisingly, the third row did not disappoint. With an adjustable second row, leg space was not a problem. While it is still a bit of an obstacle to get back there, third-row riding wasn’t a complaint. In fact, some wanted to get back there to enjoy the space, the bit of privacy and comfort. I had the chance to sit in each row and immediately grew jealous of all the passengers who get to enjoy the back seats with all of their space and comfort. But that’s not to say the driver’s seat was compromised. In fact, it is like its own apartment. Note, this vehicle, with as much space as it offers, is truly fitted for five passengers and has limited cargo space.

Technology – There’s a lot of innovation out there right now in the automotive industry and it’s a matter of prioritizing the updates as new cars come out. One thing I wasn’t particularly impressed with is the outdated look and feel of the CX-9’s technological interface. I remember some years ago driving a vehicle with a similar technological screen and interface. I didn’t like it then and I don’t like it now. The knob, while I think may be convenient for some, seems a bit burdensome when it comes to typing in addresses for example. It reminds of trying to type a text on an old cell phone before the smartphone keyboards came out. I did, however, appreciate its standard safety features and number of USB ports throughout the vehicle.

Reliability – Overall, in the area of reliability, the Mazda CX-9 gets high rankings with top fuel efficiency and great overall performance. It’s a midsize SUV with big car tendencies. It’s smooth ride and sleek design make for a solid buy in 2020. Consumers can check out this car in a variety of versions ranging from Sport to Signature, starting off at $33,890 MSRP.
