Rep. Glenn Grothman, 65, breaking out in cough at mask-optional GOP event amid global pandemic

*A Wisconsin congressman’s speech at a mask-optional Republican state convention on Saturday has gone viral because he broke into an uncontrollable coughing fit, and was not wearing a mask.

“It’s time to talk about Donald John Trump,” Rep. Glenn Grothman, 65, began loudly before being cut off by his own hacking.

Watch below:

Making matters worse, a live-stream of the event showed him high-fiving a man who introduced him, and roughly 300 attendees were in the audience. Also, the event proceeded even as Wisconsin has seen a spike in coronavirus cases, breaking a daily record for newly confirmed cases for a third straight day on the day of the convention.

One clip of Grothman coughing that circulated on Twitter was viewed more than 4.3 million times as of Monday morning. Democratic Rep. Mark Pocan, who represents the Madison area in Congress, commented on Grothman’s coughing with, “Wow.”

Grothman’s campaign manager Alec Hanna said Grothman’s coughing was due to “a dry throat and a need for a drink of water,” and not COVID-19. Hanna continued in an email, “It has not persisted and he is exhibiting no other symptoms associated with COVID-19. He previously took a COVID-19 test, with a negative result.”

Mm-hmm.

Meanwhile, Stephen Colbert couldn’t resist doing a bit Monday night on “The Late Show.”
