Say what?! Yep, that Black bird-watcher dude, Christain Cooper, is refusing to cooperate with the district attorney’s case against Amy Cooper, the white woman who called the NYPD on him.
And why is that you ask? “On the one hand, she’s already paid a steep price.” Cooper said in a statement on Tuesday, referring to Cooper who’s also known worldwide as “Central Park Karen.”
He added: “That’s not enough of a deterrent to others? Bringing her more misery just seems like piling on.”
On top of those comments the N Y Times also reports Cooper saying, “if the DA feels the need to pursue charges, he should pursue charges. But he can do that without me.”
As you can see, Christian Cooper’s decision to not cooperate in the prosecution of Amy Cooper (no relation) presents an obvious challenge for prosecutors.
Interestingly, Mr. Cooper is not alone in his thinking that enough has already been done to Ms Cooper and that prosecuting her reinforces the idea that the only just consequence for wrongdoing can come through a flawed criminal justice system.
“Ask yourself what criminal charges can do to Amy Cooper that hasn’t already been done.” Josie Duffy-Rice, president of The Appeal, a social justice website, tweeted.
Duffy-Rice who is Black continued with this:
“Has she not faced consequences? she did something absolutely horrible and she lost her job, her dog, her personal business was on the front page of the paper, we all know her face & her story.”
As we reported, the incident occurred on Memorial Day weekend when Christian Cooper asked Amy Cooper to leash her dog in an area of Central Park where dogs are required to be on a leash.
Ms. Cooper called the police and heightened her tone to indicate that she was in danger and being threatened. The incident went viral.
