*Video of a man shot and killed by Phoenix police on Saturday has sparked protests in the city Sunday night, according to 12News.com. Police have not named the man who was killed Saturday, but activists and Phoenix City Councilman Carlos Garcia identified him as James Garcia. The officers involved in the shooting have also not been identified.

According to police, officers arrived just before 1 p.m. in response to report from a caller who said a man had tried to kill him a week prior and the caller said the person responsible had returned with a knife and was threatening to harm him again. Police say the person who called directed officers to a home and said the suspect of the aggravated assault was there. Officers contacted several people inside the home and there was also a man in a vehicle parked in the home’s driveway.

According to Phoenix PD, at some point while officers were talking with the man in the driveway, he armed himself with a handgun. Officers instructed the man to get out of the vehicle and he he refused and rolled up his window. Officers instructed the man to drop the handgun, but police say he would not drop the gun but began to lift it. As he did so, two officers fired their weapons into the vehicle at the man, killing him.

The protesters called for the release of the officers’ body-cam footage, with at least one city council member also publicly criticizing the Phoenix Police Department’s handling of the incident, the Arizona Republic reported.
