Charlize Theron: ‘I Can Fight!’ Netflix’s ‘The Old Guard’ (Watch)

*Forever is harder than it looks!

Led by a warrior named Andromache of Scythia (aka Andy), a covert group of mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die are recruited for an emergency mission. It’s up to Andy and Nile (KiKi Layne), the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat.

EUR correspondent Fahnia Thomas spoke to “The Old Guard” leading ladies Charlize Theron and Layne about their kick-ass killer choreography.

Q: Why did you want Charlize Theron …and KiKi Layne to do their own stunts?

GPB: The director of photography Tami Reiker and I didn’t want to give ourselves a crutch by having an open set. We built the plane – it’s life-size – and didn’t have any walls that could move. So the camera couldn’t go anywhere it would normally go, so that made it absolutely harder. It added to the grounding-ness. We wanted you to feel these two women going at each other toe to toe.

Q: What was it like performing the fight scene on the plane?

CT: The trickiest part was playing a character who has lived for over 6,000 years and is a skilled technical martial arts fighter. For anyone who knows anything about martial arts, the dedication it takes to be a skilled anything martial arts takes years! People live in huts in Thailand for 40 years to get good at one thing. It was really challenging to sell the technique because I’m not a martial arts fighter. I can fight – my tenacity and scrappy-ness have always been good for me. I’ve always applied that to all of my characters but in this case, I really couldn’t. I had to make her very technical.

KL: It was crazy because [the plane scene was] the first scene we shot for the film. It threw us into it – especially me because this was my first time doing this genre. I’m grateful for it because it helped us dig deeper into the relationship between Andy and Nile. It gave us a great foundation.

Q: What specifically made you want to do “The Old Guard?”

KL: I was ready to sign up and say yes before I had even read the script – just knowing Gina was directing it and Charlize was attached to it that let me know this film had to be dope. Then when I actually read the graphic novel it was really amazing to see these characters with extraordinary abilities fighting throughout all these centuries. Plus, they’re still experiencing things humans can relate to.

Netflix’s “The Old Guard” drops globally July 10.
