Uber Eats Accused of ‘Discrimination’ After Waiving Delivery Fees for Black-owned Businesses

Uber

*Uber Eats is waiving delivery fees for Black-owned businesses for the remainder of 2020.

The move is meant to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement as protests continue across the nation (and internationally) over race relations and police brutality of Black people.

The app’s delivery fees typically run $3 to $5.

“Uber stands in solidarity with the Black community and with peaceful protests against the injustice and racism that have plagued our nation for too long,” CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in an emailed statement, via UK Metro Times.  “My hope is that if each of us recommits to doing all we can to counter bigotry wherever we see it, change will follow.”

Uber is also donating $1 million to the Center for Policing Equity and the Equal Justice Initiative, which aims to end mass incarceration and racial inequality, the report states.

“We know this isn’t enough. It won’t be enough until we see true racial justice. But we plan to work day in and day out to improve, learn and grow as a company,” Khosrowshahi said.

Here’s more from Business Insider:

According to the Observer, cities like New Jersey, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, D.C., charge 10 to 20% for the city executive order fee. Clients using Uber Eats get a pop-up message when they check out their orders, showing the effect some restaurant owners feel because this law.

Khosrowshahi said in his statement that waiving the delivery is not enough.

“But we plan to work day in and day out to improve, learn, and grow as a company,” Khosrowshahi said. “Lastly, let me speak clearly and unequivocally: Black Lives Matter.”

Meanwhile, many have criticized the company for showing love to Black folks, accusing Uber of “discriminating” against other businesses, most especially eateries owned by people of color.

One Twitter user wrote, “How exactly is charging no delivery fee of black owned businesses…But charging normal fees for Asian owned businesses “equality”.
