Gina Prince-Bythewood On Encountering Karens (Watch)

*Its directed by a remarkable female!

Gina Prince-Bythewood‘s latest film “The Old Guard” – a gritty, grounded, action-packed story showing living forever is harder than it looks – hits Netflix July 10. EUR correspondent Fahnia Thomas talked to the Cali native about Karens, Kiki and choreography.

Q: When was the last time you witnessed or encountered an Amy Cooper (aka Karen)?

GPB: I haven’t! But I know it’s going to happen. I feel like I’m ready because I’ve watched so many of those videos. I have my speech [ready]. I know what I’m gonna do.

Q: What are you going to say?

GPB: You gotta wait for the video.

Q: From a director’s perspective, what was it like working with KiKi Layne (plays Nile Freeman)?

GPB: When I was casting Nile I needed an actress with chops and secondly, you gotta believe you’re a Marine – that’s a big deal to have that innate strength. I was struggling to find her but then Barry Jenkins invited me to see an early cut of “If Beale Street Could Talk.” I remember watching and saying, ‘damn that girl is good but she’s too soft!’ She could never play Nile. But she came in to audition and within five seconds I was like, ‘OH my God I found Nile!’ She was that good. She’s just next level. And then sitting and talking with her afterwards and telling her, ‘look if you’re going to do this type of movie it takes work to do these stunts and I don’t want to have stunt doubles, I want it to be you.’ And she was all on board. She wanted to put the work in and it shows up on the screen.

Q: What specifically made you want to do “The Old Guard?” Was it part two vibes?

GPB: The list is long…foremost this is a world I wanted to be in. I love action movies. We don’t always get the opportunities to make them but I know I’m not the only female who loves this genre. When I got the script I fell in love with the characters. There are two female leads and the fact that one of them was a young Black female hero which we never get to see. The characters are trying to find their purpose which I think despite them being immortal, an audience can absolutely identify with and connect with them. Greg Rucka (Writer) always envisioned this as a trilogy so to be at the start of something – hopefully if the audience digs it – that’s a very cool thing.

Based on the graphic novel by Greg Rucka “The Old Guard” also stars Charlize Theron, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Van Veronica Ngo, and Matthias Schoenaerts.
