*Dawnn Lewis … actress, singer, voice actress and songwriter. We are celebrating her… Just Because.
Seemed like right before the coronavirus situation shut down all the Broadway theater activity, Dawnn was on her way to a possible Tony Nomination in my opinion for best-supporting actress in a musical. The Name of the musical is “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical.”
As I flashback, I had such great moments of euphoria as I sat in my theater seat. The show’s leads of Adrienne Warren as Tina Turner & Daniel J. Watts as Ike Turner are great as is the entire cast but I was pleasantly wowed by Dawnn Lewis’s virtuoso performance as Tina Turner’s mother, Zelma.
Dawnn’s superb acting & voice characterization as well as her musical talents & singing was hitting all points throughout the incredible show. Dawnn was able to capture Tina Turner’s mother in her vibrant healthy & strong-willed ways all the way to her weak & failing health ways. Tina Turner herself who was at the star-studded opening gave Dawnn kudos as well. Dawnn is such a multi-talented veteran pro of the entertainment game.
Dawnn Lewis is also known for her role as Jaleesa Vinson–Taylor on the NBC smash hit television sitcom A Different World from the series’ beginning in 1987 until the end of its fifth season in 1992. In addition to being on the show, Lewis co-wrote the theme song as she is a multiple music award winner in her own right including a grammy & BMI songwriter award just to name a few.
Dawnn Lewis has appeared on various stage, screen & television platforms in her illustrious career. Dawnn is also Brooklyn bred. (Brooklyn’s In The House!) She is the only girl amongst her sibling supporters of 3 beloved brothers: Leif Lewis, Lorin Lewis & Lacey Lace Lewis. Dawnn’s beloved matriarch mother Joyce Lewis is the proud queen.
So as we wait till this COVID situation is over, let’s keep in mind the memories of Dawnn’s versatile performances in the Tina Turner Musical on Broadway as we celebrate Dawnn now & forever … Just Because.
