*The driver shown in a viral video laying on his horn and slowly running his yellow “Maids” car into Black Lives Matter protesters in Oregon has been confirmed as the mayor of a neighboring city and is now under criminal investigation.
The Washington Post reports that Medford police are now investigating allegations that Chris Luz, mayor of nearby Phoenix, drove his car steadily into a group of protesters on June 6 and struck a woman who stopped to hold up a sign. After protesters continued to block his path, he got out and yelled at them to move out of his way, adding, “I’m on your side!”
During a city council meeting Monday, that woman who was allegedly struck by his car, Mikala Johnston, confronted him directly. She told him, “The city of Phoenix cannot ignore that the mayor is in fact a criminal. There is absolutely no excuse for the actions that you took that day, Chris. Chris, you assaulted me.”
Mayor Luz declined to comment at the council meeting.
