*All nine episodes of HBO’s fictional series “Watchmen,” with its emphasis on masks and roots in the 1921 Tulsa Race Riot months before the existence of COVID-19 and Donald Trump’s planned rally return made them current news, will be offered free of charge for non-subscribers beginning Friday, June 19 (aka Juneteenth) and ending Sunday, June 21. It’ll be available exclusively on HBO.com and Free On Demand, as an extension of the network’s content highlighting Black experiences, voices and storytellers.

Set in an alternate history where masked vigilantes are treated as outlaws, Peabody Award winner “Watchmen” opens with a harrowing depiction of the Tulsa Race Riot, which becomes an integral part of the story as it moves to present day. Regina King gives a soaring lead performance in the series, which HBO says “embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name, while attempting to break new ground of its own.”
