Tyler Perry: Entertainment Mogul to Pay for Rayshard Brooks’ Funeral

*Tyler Perry will cover the funeral expenses of Rayshard Brooks, the Black man who was fatally shot by an Atlanta police officer on Friday night.

The media mogul has also offered to pay for the college expenses for Brooks’ children.

A source tells PEOPLE, Perry “spoke to Rayshard’s family and wanted to do something to help.”

“His heart goes out to the family during this tragic time,” adds the source.

Brooks, 27, died from 3 gunshot wounds to the back during an altercation with police at a Wendy’s parking lot. He reportedly succumbed to his injuries after undergoing surgery.

His death has been ruled a homicide, according to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

In the wake of Brooks’ death, Atlanta police chief Erika Shields resigned, and Garrett Rolfe, the officer that shot him, was fired.

Protesters took to the streets immediately following the incident to demand justice. His family held a press conference on Monday, calling on demonstrators to be peaceful “because we want to keep his name positive and great,” said Brooks’ widow Tomika Miller

“I just ask that if you could just keep it as a peaceful protest that would be wonderful, because we want to keep his name positive and great.” Miller said.

“I’ve been doing this for 15 years, I don’t know what justice is anymore. Is it getting them arrested? Is it getting somebody fired? Is it a chief stepping down? I know that this isn’t justice, what’s happening in society right now,” said  L. Chris Stewart, an attorney for Brooks’ family. “We’re just tired. And if you don’t understand that because you may be a different color, you may be a different gender, you may not be from Georgia, then you may be the problem.”

Brooks is survived by his wife and four children: Dream, 1, Memory, 2, Blessing, 8, and Mekai, 13.

A GoFundMe page has been created to support his family.
