*“To have a Black woman and an Asian woman in a relationship on TV is the type of representation that we need,” singer Janelle Monae said of her character on the hit HBO series “Homecoming.”
In a new interview/feature for Variety’s 2020 Power of Women issue, Monae noted that it’s an “honor” being “a member of the LGBTQIA+ community.
She also spoke on the tragic death of George Floyd and called on progressive white Americans to speak out against racism and police brutality.
“Because we need you. We need more people inside these places, inside these police precincts and these buildings, to stand up. And to be marching. And to be right there with us.”

And when it comes to how the Trump administration has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic, Janelle says “This administration, along with the president… they’re evil.”
She also spoke on her quarantine experience.
“I don’t really know what day it is most days and nights. I’m questioning time — does it even exist? Yes, we are in this together. But we’re not all going through the same experience financially. My situation is a lot different than a single black mom with five kids who just got laid off.”
Meanwhile, Monáe is paying it forward through her company Wondaland Arts Society. The collective teamed with the charity Project Isaiah, and airline caterer Gate Gourmet, to help feed those in need during the coronavirus pandemic.
“Yes, we are in this together,” Monáe says. “But we’re not all going through the same experience financially. My situation is a lot different than a single black mom with five kids who just got laid off.”
