Are you getting enough vitamins and minerals to help fight COVID-19? By A Beloved Daughter

Potassium is believed to play a vital role in the treatment of COVID-19 if symptoms become severe. Doctors in China protect against respiratory infections in general. Consult your health care provider to get your current level of vitamin D and if you’re deficient, make the necessary adjustments to maintain a healthy level.

Zinc (and Selenium) Supplements would not benefit most people unless they are deficient in the mineral. Deficiency is more common among the elderly population. This group could benefit by 20 mg per day of zinc or food choices to  improve the chance of respiratory tract infection, as suggested by a study conducted in France nursing facilities. (People in that study were also deficient in selenium, and were given 100 mcg per day. Some vegetarians and people taking certain medications, such as those that reduce stomach acid and ACE inhibitors, on a long-term basis. The daily requirement for zinc varies by age, but, for adults, is about 11 mg. You are advised to consult your healthcare provider, to learn if you are deficient in zinc. Consider increasing your intake of zinc-rich foods like seeds, nuts, some processed meats, and even dark chocolate.

Supplements that may help reduce symptoms of coronavirus

Astragalus (or Huang qi) is an herb in the legume family that has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to strengthen the immune system and to treat colds. Some websites claim that it helps to protect against COVID-19. Astragalus may be sold as a root powder, extract or tea, and as a single ingredient or as part of an “immune-boosting” formula.

Laboratory and animal studies suggest polysaccharides, astragalosides and other compounds in astragalus increase the production of white blood cells, particularly T cells and macrophages, and other cells important for immune system function (Block, Integr Cancer Ther 2003). In China, astragalus, alone and in combination with other herbs, has been suggested to potentially help prevent COVID-19 infections (Yang, Int J Biol Sci 2020).
There’s no current clinical evidence that promotes astragalus as a preventive treatment for coronavirus infections in humans. Again, please consult your health care provider for his or her recommendations especially if you have a diagnosed autoimmune disorder.

Raw Elderberries are roughly 80% water, 18% carbohydrates, with trace amounts of protein and fat, but can supply 43% of the daily allowance of vitamin C. You can reap the benefits if served as a tea, extract, or in pill form. Elderberries in whatever mode you choose, will help prevent or relieve the symptoms of colds, the flu and constipation.

Garlic has been shown in laboratory studies to inhibit certain flu and cold viruses, and one clinical trial suggests garlic supplements may help to prevent colds. However, there is no current evidence that eating garlic or taking a garlic supplement can help prevent or treat COVID-19, as noted on the World Health Organization’s Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) Myth busters website.

Quercetin is a yellow crystalline pigment found in plants we eat. According to healthline.com, it’s used as a food supplement to reduce allergic responses and boost immunity.  Foods that contain Quercetin are apples, berries, broccoli, citrus fruits, grapes and tea and capers. It is also available as a dietary supplement in capsule or powder form.

Turmeric is best known for its anti-inflammatory effects and in treating certain viruses in laboratory studies. No peer-review evaluation exists documenting its treatment against COVID-19. According to Wikipedia.org, Ayurvedic medicine touts turmeric in preventing or reducing the symptoms of the cold, and the flu. Season your food with this spice or use it tea form to enjoy its benefits for yourself. Remember to use precautions because it will stain any surface.
