Lil Wayne: ‘We Should Blame Ourselves’ for Death of George Floyd

Lil Wayne

*During an Instagram Live chat with Fat Joe, Lil Wayne spoke about the protests erupting in several cities across the nation over of the death of George Floyd, who was killed on camera by now-fired Minneapolis Police Department officer Derek Chauvin.

Wayne believes if we want to see an end to systematic oppression and police brutality, then “We have to stop placing the blame on the whole force and the whole everybody or a certain race or everybody with a badge… And if we want to place the blame on anybody, it should be ourselves for not doing more than what we think we’re doing,” he said.

To recap what we’ve previously reported… Floyd was killed on Memorial Day, after officers attempted to arrest the 46-year-old on suspicion of forgery. A young woman on the scene filmed the incident, showing Floyd handcuffed and on the ground with Chauvin kneeling on the back of his neck, and pleading: “Please, I can’t breathe.”

The officer ignores Floyd, even after he appears to lose consciousness he keeps his knee on the victim’s neck for nearly five minutes.

Four police officers were fired Tuesday in connection with Floyd’s death but on Friday (May 29) only Chauvin was with third-degree manslaughter.

“I think when we see these situations, I think we also have to understand that we have to get very specific,” said Wayne of the Floyd tragedy. “And what I mean by that is we have to stop viewing it with such a broad view, meaning we have to stop placing the blame on the whole force and the whole everybody or a certain race or everybody with a badge.”

He continued: “We have to actually get into who that person is. And if we want to place the blame on anybody, it should be ourselves for not doing more than what we think we’re doing.”

Elsewhere, Weezy explained why he rarely speaks out on issues impacting the culture, such as Floyd’s death.

“What else am I gonna do after that?” he told Fat Joe. “Some people put a tweet out and they think they did something. Some people wear a shirt and they think they did something. What you gonna do after that? Did you actually help the person? Did you actually help the family? Did you actually go out there and do something? So, if I ain’t about to do all that, then I ain’t about to do nothing. I’ll pray for ya.”
