*Dr. Maya Rockeymoore Cummings is on a mission to convince Maryland’s 7th District voters that she is the best person to continue the work of her late husband, the honorable Congressman Elijah Cummings.  She also hopes to establish new initiatives of her own.

Dr. Cummings announced her candidacy for the Congressional seat in November 2019, a few days before undergoing a preventative double mastectomy.  She emerged from a successful surgery with physical strength and mental clarity.

She waged a potent campaign for the February 4th 2020 primary election, but on April 28th 2020 Mrs. Cummings lost in a special election with former Congressman Kweisi Mfume, where he won the opportunity to serve the last eight months of Congressman Elijah Cummings’ term.

Mr. Mfume represented Maryland’s 7th district from 1987 to 1996 but left to serve as President of the NAACP.  The special election results motivated Maya to travail even harder. It was her husband’s wish that she would become his successor.

Dr. Rockeymoore Cumming is undaunted and in a fast fight to claim the post by winning the June  2nd 2020 primary election, carrying on her husband’s legacy and defeating former Congressman Kweisi Mfume and Republican contender Kimberly Klacik.  The winner will fill the remaining two years of Maryland’s 7th district congressional term.

Maya Rockeymoore Cummings’ fortitude has long been proven before now. She was not only a loving mate to her late husband, but a perfect match for their joint focus and commitment to government and public service.  She made it clear when speaking to EURweb’s LaRita Shelby.

Maya Rockeymoore Cummings: “Folks need to know that I met Elijah on Capital Hill.  He met me and I was already working on Capital Hill.”

That work included serving on the House Ways and Means Committee and being the former Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party,  as well as the former Chief of Staff for former Democratic Representative of New York, Charlie Rangel.  Dr. Cummings also worked with the National Urban League as Senior Resident scholar for health and income security and she was a member of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and Chairman of the Board of the national committee to preserve social security and Medicare during President George W. Bush’s administration.

Maya Rockeymoore Cummings: “My work is focused on diversity, inclusion and equity. I have been a 21st Century fighter for civil rights.”

Added to these initiatives is Mrs. Cummings’ Bold New Deal for COVID 19, which includes a national master plan calling on Congress to work with experts on public health; a Healthcare emergency approach for access to health care, a Medicare for all health plan, an economic plan assuring income assistance for those who are in need, and a plan to stimulate the overall economy as well.  Additionally, Dr. Cummings is in sync with the hearts of young people who need the tools and guidance for political advocacy.  For this cause, she authored The Political Action Handbook: A How-To Guide for the Hip Hop Generation.
