*We’ve got an update of the Ahmaud Arbery situation. The Department of Justice has announced that it is finally getting involved with the controversial case.

The department says it is investigating the shooting death of Arbery as a hate crime. The DOJ is also taking a close look a the two district attorneys who recused themselves from the case, according to Arbery’s family attorney S. Lee Merritt.

Merritt confirmed that local Justice Department representatives informed Arbery’s family about the investigation.

These two DA’s who will be looked at are Brunswick D.A. Jackie Johnson and Ware County D.A. George Barnhill.

As we reported, Arbery, 25, was shot to death while jogging through a Brunswick, Georgia neighborhood in February. The suspects, Gregory and Travis McMichael, a father/son duo, were arrested and charged with murder. They told police they thought Arbery was stealing from a home that was under construction.

Johnson was the first D.A. assigned the case but she soon recused herself because Gregory McMichael is a retired investigator who had previously worked in her office.

The case was then assigned to Barnhill, who then recused himself several weeks later. At this time, it’s not clear why. However, he has been criticized for saying he felt the shooting was justified under self-defense and citizen’s arrest laws.

Arbery’s mother, meanwhile, pointed out that Barnhill’s son also works in the Brunswick District Attorney’s Office.

Arbery’s friends and family have publicly stated they want both DAs should be removed from office.
