Vanessa Williams: Actress Clears Up Confusion Surrounding Her Name [VIDEO]

*When the trailer for the new “Candyman” movie dropped, fans of the Black horror film were thrilled to see actress Vanessa Williams reprising her role of Anne-Marie in the cult classic.

But when media outlets began to report on the buzz surrounding the film, they incorrectly added a middle initial to Vanessa’s name. As reported by ShadowandAct, Vanessa Williams erroneously became Vanessa “A.” Williams.

Here’s the confusion… actress Vanessa L. Williams of “Ugly Betty” and “Soul Food” (the movie) fame has an initial in her professional name. Vanessa Williams, who starred in “Soul Food” the Showtime series has no initial in her name and was first to register her name with all professional guilds.

Williams addressed the error surrounding her name Thursday during an interview on Shadow And Act’s new Facebook series, Locked Down With: Vanessa Williams (starting at 35:17 in the clip above).

Universal Pictures recently released the first official trailer of the sequel to the 1992 film, co-written and produced by Jordan Peele, and due in theaters on June 12.

Based on the short story “The Forbidden” by Clive Barker, the original film followed a graduate student in Chicago completing a thesis on urban legends, which led her to the legend of “Candyman,” the ghost of an artist and son of a slave who was murdered in the late 19th century.

The sequel,  directed by Nia DaCosta, stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Watchmen) as Anthony McCoy, a young artist looking to spark renewed interest in the local myth surrounding Chicago’s now gentrified and safe Cabrini Green projects. It does not go well.

Rounding out the cast is Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, Colman Domingo, with Tony Todd and Vanessa A. Williams reprising their roles as the title character and Anne-Marie McCoy.
