*While we were all watching “The Last Dance” on ESPN Sunday night, “American Idol” was quietly and virtually crowning its first at-home winner on sister station ABC.
Samantha Diaz, a 21-year-old subway singer from Harlem, New York, who calls herself “Just Sam,” was announced the winner while at her “home” away from home in Los Angeles. As previously reported, when all of the “Idol” finalists were sent home to social distance, Sam decided to stay in L.A. because she didn’t want to inadvertently put her grandmother at risk of contracting COVID-19. She lives with her grandmother because her mom is incarcerated.
Grandma was with her Sunday night via iPad, which Sam was clutching in her arms as she awaited the winner reveal from host Ryan Seacrest, who was broadcasting from his garage.
