Ahmaud Arbery: Autopsy Results Show He Was Shot 3 Times

ahmaud arbery - gregory&travis mcmichael

*Ahmaud Arbery’s autopsy was performed on February 24 by the Glynn County Coroner, and only now is it being released amid the heightened public interest in the controversial case.

25-year-old Arbery was shot three times and “died of multiple shotgun wounds sustained during a struggle for the shotgun.”

This supports the video footage showing the moment he was gunned down earlier this year by two suspected white supremacists while jogging near his hometown in Brunswick, Ga. Ahmaud was unarmed when he was shot in the Satilla Shores neighborhood on February 23.

Travis McMichael, 34, and his father, Gregory, 64, a retired cop, had seen Arbery running in the area and decided to arm themselves, chase him down in a pickup truck and kill him.

His death has been ruled a homicide by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, according to a copy of the autopsy report obtained by PEOPLE.

Travis and Gregory followed Ahmaud and demanded that he stop and talk to them, believing him to be a burglary suspect. When he refused to obey, they got out of their truck, confronted him and after a struggle over the shotgun with Travis, Arbery was shot and killed.

He sustained two close-range gunshot wounds in the chest, as well as a graze wound on his right wrist.

“We’re literally hunted EVERYDAY/EVERYTIME we step foot outside the comfort of our homes!” LeBron James wrote on Twitter last week in response to the video. “Can’t even go for a damn jog man! Like WTF man are you kidding me?!?!?!?!?!?”

“No man fr ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!” James continued, offering his condolences to Arbery’s family. “I’m sorry Ahmaud (Rest In Paradise) and my prayers and blessings sent to the….. heavens above to your family!!”

State officials seemed to pave the way for father and son to escape charges, claiming they had a right to defend themselves against the “aggressive” black man…. but after a video was posted online last week showing what really went down, both Travis and Gregory were arrested and charged May 7 with murder and aggravated assault.

Glynn County Police told CNN there were no burglary reports in the area at the time of Arbery’s shooting.

“I don’t think I’ll ever be in a mental state where I can actually watch the video,” Arbery’s mother, Wanda Cooper-Jones, told “Good Morning America.”

Adding, “I had others watch and share what they saw, and that was enough.”
