Comedian Aries Spears Channels Barney Fife For His ‘Bad Cop’ Role In ‘The 4:20 Movie’ [EUR Exclusive]

*We caught up with comedian Aries Spears to dish about his role in “The 4:20 Movie,” a new high concept comedy that takes place pre-legalization, and centers on two sisters who create the first electronic blunt in order to save their father, Mayor Hightower, along with the city he loves from bankruptcy and a three-foot tall Mexican drug lord.

Spears plays the hilarious, off-kilter and completely unfiltered Patrolman Watkins, a character he describes as “a mixture of Barney Fife from The Andy Griffith Show.”

Watkins, Aries says, is also “A little bit of my own desire to emulate what we all know the bad cops can do,”  he tells EURweb’s Ny Magee in an exclusive interview (conducted in the days after the nation went on COVID-19 lockdown in late March).

The 420 Movie | Aries Spears

The  “License And Registration” scene with the two sisters shows a hilarious takes on reverse racial profiling. What are some of the other social or political themes explored in this film?

SPEARS:  There’s probably a lot of things; if I’m being honest with you, I really didn’t hang out too much with everybody else and get a chance to explore what everybody else was doing. I know from what I gather, the movie is probably the least politically correct thing out there, so it probably explores  all the things that are deemed dangerous and deemed not acceptable.

How does this film speak to the ongoing debate about marijuana legalization?

The bottom line is it just should be legalized. There are so many other things that probably shouldn’t be legalized but weed brings people together or at least makes them eat a lot of chips. I think there are a lot of other serious things that we could be tackling , so at the end of the day, I think it’s an all out, feel good fun movie for people to just lighten up.

So, how much marijuana smoking was going down on set?

Probably none. It’s fact versus fiction. It’s a weed movie but they ain’t really smoking weed unless Snoop Dogg is in it. So I’m pretty sure none.

Do you celebrate 4:20?

You know occasionally I do. I’m not a heavy weed smoker the way I was once upon a time ago but yeah, I dabble.

The 420 Movie

This year’s 4:20 celebration is going to be curbed due to the coronavirus lockdown and social distancing.

I say stock up on weed like you stocking up on toilet paper.

Do you think tackling the way politics impacts marijuana usage is easier to digest in entertainment when it’s wrapped in comedy?

I think things are always easiest to be digested when there’s a laugh so hopefully this movie does that. I don’t know how far it goes; if it went too far or not far enough so I guess we’ll find out shortly.

“The 4:20 Movie” also features Daniel Baldwin, Keith David, rapper Shwayze and RiFF RAFF.

The film will hit iTunes/Amazon May 5th.
