“Antebellum,” the horror film that stars Janelle Monáe is now set to debut in theaters on August 21, announced Lionsgate, the film’s studio/distributor.
If you’ve seen the trailer, you know this is a totally different kind of thriller. TIt’s from the producers associated with Jordan Peele’s hit films “Get Out” and “Us.” Essentially it’s about Monáe, a successful writer, being mysteriously abducted and transported to what appears to be an alternate reality where she is a slave in the south.
“Antebellum” was originally scheduled to open in theaters on April 24. However, the coronavirus changed all that. The studio, by the way, also postponed the highly anticipated “Saw” reboot starring Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson.

Besides, Monáe, the cast for “Antebellum” includes Marque Richardson II, Eric Lange, Jack Huston, Kiersey Clemons, Tongayi Chirisa, Gabourey Sidibe, Rob Aramayo, Lily Cowles, and Jena Malone.
The film, written and directed by Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, is Monáe’s first lead movie role after previously having key roles in “Harriet,” “Hidden Figures” and “Moonlight.”
