Sheryl Lee Ralph Talks New show ‘Motherland: Fort Salem’ and Advice During Pandemic

*Los Angeles, CA – Few African American actresses come to mind when you consider who established, what is now a substantial sized black Hollywood.

Sheryl Lee Ralph would undoubtedly take up one of the slots.  Known for her memorable and iconic roles (Dream Girls, Moesha, Sister Act 2), this prolific actress has added, yet, another strong character to her resume.

Motherland: Fort Salem” is an exciting new show set in an alternate, present-day America in which Ralph’s character (Kelly Wade) is the 45th President of the United States.

EUR’s Robin Ayers had a chance to chat with the singer, actress, activist, author and self-proclaimed DIVA.

“How often have you worked with someone on a project such as a director, or producer, or even castmates, and it’s turned into a collaboration for another project?” asks Robin.

“Some of my best collaborations have happened that way,” says Ralph.  “That’s what happened with Motherland: Fort Salem,” says Ralph.

She continues, “I had the opportunity to play Matilda on “Claws” which was also created by Eliot Laurence and he asked me to come on board to play the President of the United States.”

When asked what her advice would be to everyone quarantined at home she recommends that everyone refocus and ground themselves to get a more clear direction for what to do when this pandemic is over.

Self-care is really important too.  She refers to her daughter, Ivy Coco Maurice, who has taken after her mom in terms of self-care and has now created a “Vibe Kit” business including sage sticks, incense, and Himalayan crystal salt, specifically meant for taking care of oneself.

For her personally, Sheryl Lee Ralph, who’s already penned the book “Redefining DIVA: Life Lessons from the Original Dreamgirl,” says writing has resonated with her.

“However you can get it out, just get it out.  Hone your craft.”

New episodes of “Motherland: Fort Salem” air at 9p/8c every Wednesday night.  Be sure to check it out on Freefrom.  Follow Sheryl Lee Ralph on Instagram @diva3482.
