*Today, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer called into SiriusXM’s “The Joe Madison Show” to talk to host, Joe Madison about looking into making election day a holiday, responded to her portrayal on Saturday Night Live, and discussed the status of the independent redistricting commission.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer tells Joe Madison about her thoughts on making election day a state holiday: “I’m going to take a look at it. I have the complication of a legislature that doesn’t see eye-to-eye with me on making it easier for people to vote….but I do think that that is a smart move that Gov. Northam made, and if there was a way to replicate something of that nature here, that’s always something I’d be interested in doing.”
During the interview, Joe Madison asks Gov. Whitmer how she felt she was portrayed on Saturday Night Live, and Gov. Whitmer responds: “It was funny. You know. But it’s funny when people think about Michigan, I think we’re so far north of some, they conflate us with Canada. Labatt’s Beer is a fine beer, but it’s a Canadian draught. I’ve been drinking Michigan beer.”
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer also discussed the independent redistricting commission: “We’re going to have a group that draws the lines that is not the legislature. That’s how it’s been done in Michigan. It’s why we have such a gerrymandered legislature, that really, doesn’t reflect the will of where the Michigan people are, by and large. And so, after this next round, the legislature, I would anticipate, will look very different because lines will have been drawn to ensure that there is, that really one vote, that everyone has fair representation.”
