Fans Says Colorism to Blame for ‘Salt-n-Pepa’ Casting Choices in Lifetime Biopic

*Fans of Salt-N-Pepa have reacted to the trailer for Lifetime’s forthcoming biopic on the hip-hop icons, and many are not feeling everything from its production value to the wardrobe and the casting.

As previously reported by TheWrap, the 3-hour miniseries follows the story of nursing students Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton as they fall into the world of rap after recording for a friend’s school project.

Salt-N-Pepa became the first female rap act to go platinum and bag multiple Grammy wins while paving the way for all female rappers.

The miniseries will feature some of their greatest hits and will be executive produced by Cheryl and Sandra, along with Jesse Collins. Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere will also executive produce from Flavor Unit, the report states.

The cast includes G.G. Townson as Cheryl “Salt” James and Laila Odom as Sandra “Pepa” Denton. Monique Paul will play Deidra Roper aka DJ Spinderella.

But many fans have slammed the casting choices, with some calling out the obvious colorism.

As reported by New York Daily News, YouTube personality Secretary of Shade noted, “I love Salt-N-Pepa to death…but honey, it’s a chop,” he denounced. “That s— look cheap as hell. It looks like a TikTok version of what the movie is supposed to be. And that’s not good.”

“They don’t look like the Salt-N-Pepa that [I know],” he continued. “Salt-N-Pepa were very ethnic-looking… And that’s no shade.”

Meanwhile, when Salt-N-Pepa first talked about the biopic with ABC News, James noted, “there ain’t no dark skin Salt and light skin Pepa,” she said. “They’re actually going to look like us,” Denton interjected.

“We are real executive producers and our hands are in the pot,” James concluded.

Helmed by veteran actor and director Mario Van Peebles, no air date for the project has been announced.
