Joe Biden to Name VP Running Mate by May 1 – Won’t Commit to Picking Woman of Color

Joe Biden

*Joe Biden has shocked some reporters with his recent comments about choosing a woman of color as VP running mate.

There’s a lot of debate happening across social media about Biden selecting a Black woman for his VP running mate, preferably Michelle Obama, Stacey Abrams or Kamala Harris.

While Obama has made clear that she’s not interested in running for office, Biden told Pittsburgh TV station KDKA on Monday that he would pick her as his running mate “in a heartbeat.”

“She’s brilliant. She knows the way around. She is a really fine woman,” the said. “The Obamas are great friends.”

Last week, Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris said they would accept the position if Biden asked them, and Abrams told Elle she’d be “an excellent running mate.”

“It is very important that my administration look like the public, look like the nation,” Biden said in an interview with KDKA. “And there will be, committed that there will be a woman of color on the Supreme Court, that doesn’t mean there won’t be a vice president, as well.”

As noted by NewsOne, a recent poll found that Biden running with a Black candidate could boost his chances of winning the 2020 election.

But if he does not select a Black woman he risks losing their support, and as The Grio put it with its headline: “he can kiss Black folks goodbye.”

Meanwhile, former vice president Biden said he intends to name a panel of advisers by May 1 to help him select a running mate.

“The first, the most important quality is someone who — if I walked away immediately from the office for whatever reason — that they can be president,” Biden said Wednesday via an appearance on “The Late Late Show with James Corden.” He added that he wants the public to be able to see his pick as “capable of being president of the United States tomorrow.”
