Family of Ex-NFL Star Kellen Winslow II Details His Dark Depression in Letters to Judge

Kellen Winslow Jr.

*Family and friends of former believe NFL star Kellen Winslow II believe brain injuries from football can be linked to his corrupt behavior that ultimately landed him in jail for sex crimes.

Winslow’s loved ones have penned letters to a San Diego judge blaming CTE and injuries he sustained in a 2005 motorcycle accident as the root cause for his depression and criminal antics.

We previously reported, Winslow was jailed a year ago for sexual assault against five women, including the rape of a 58-year-old homeless woman in 2018.

The letters are part of an effort by attorneys to get him a light sentence as Winslow awaits final judgement. He faces 12 to 18 years in prison as part of a plea agreement he made in November, USA TODAY Sports reports.

“I now know he was extremely angry with me for suggesting that after his seventh season in the NFL it was time to leave the game,” Kellen Winslow Sr. wrote in the letter to San Diego County Superior Court judge Blaine Bowman. “Still, he was able to pass a teams medical physical and play another two seasons. Even after it was clear to the entire NFL that his career was over, he waited three years for a phone call from an NFL team that was never going to come. I imagine that his depression deepened as he sought that miracle surgery or device that would take away the pain in his knee and return him to the NFL.”

Kellen’s supporters have also urged the judge to show a bit a sympathy for the troubled brotha by noting that what he most needs is psychological help and rehabilitation, the report states.

“Kellen always thought that his knee injury plagued his career and kept him from achieving the greatness that he sought,” wrote Pete Shaw, a former NFL teammate of Winslow’s father who has known the former pro-athlete since birth. “After a couple of seasons passed and no one offered him the opportunity to play again, his behavior, now we know, became abhorrent and out of character for him.”

“Kellen has expressed remorse for these crimes,” Winslow II’s mother Katrina Ramsey wrote in a separate letter to Bowman. “As a family we are strong in faith and we pray for forgiveness of these crimes and he continues to ask for forgiveness from the victims and their families. He is suffering and he needs medical help. He has never been a problem child or adult and has been a wonderful son all of his life. As a past NFL wife myself, I can honestly say that NFL injuries whether it be mentally or physically are severely crippling those that loved and played the game.”

She also noted, “This is not the son we raised and these accusations were things that Kellen would never have done in his RIGHT MIND!” she wrote. “He always has been a very polite, kind and fun loving young man.”

Kellen has been in jail without bail since March 2019.
