Food …Immune Boosters!

Know this…
…that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit. Do we treat it with respect knowing who our most honored guest is? It’s said that cleanliness is next to godliness…so does that mean daily baths, clean clothes, rest, and exercise. During this time of the pandemic and a nationwide quarantine, whether we are working from home or part of the groups required to report to the workplace, we must remind ourselves that though we are fearfully and wonderfully made, it’s our responsibility to maintain a proper diet.

Know this…
There are certain foods God created that will boost our immune systems! Kick start our internal fighters, our white
blood cells. Those little fighters are small, but mighty warriors in our body that will defend us against the common colds, flu,  and even aid in our resistance against the Covid-19.

1. Citrus fruits
Clementine
Grapefruit
Lemon/Lime
Oranges
Tangerines

The body doesn’t produce or store vitamin C.

2. Bell peppers
Peppers are reportedly to have twice as much vitamin C as citrus fruits. They support healthy skin and are good for the eyes.

3. Broccoli
Super rich in both vitamins and minerals. Also packed with vitamins A, C and E. Baked, gently steamed to keep a bit of crunch, or raw, you won’t regret this healthy veggie!

7. Yogurt (dairy or non-dairy)

This is a food rich in vitamin D. Always read the label to determine the amount of “live and active cultures” that will
help to return the natural flora in the gut.

Know this…
A healthy digestive system is a key to utilizing the nutrients in the foods we eat.

8. Almonds
Believe it or not, this tree nut is filled with vitamin E which is a key element to fighting off colds boosting the immune system. It’s considered a healthy fat.

This little gem is spicy and a potent, anti-inflammatory fighter against joint pain. It’s been known to aid in treating
osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Naturally filled a massive amount of essential nutrients like folate, potassium, vitamins C and K. This fruit boosts the immune system’s fighters…white blood cells to keep our bodies running on all cylinders!

11. Water, water, water, water, water…

Know this…

…that prevention is worth a pound of cure. The way to help yourself and your loved ones is to follow a healthy life style, regularly. Plan your meals to include all the nutrients the body needs. Know what to do before any illness occurs. According to RN, Olga Kaitlyn…Should you succumb to anillness including Coronavirus, know how to treat yourself at
home

 Acetaminophen (Tylenol) in 325 mg tablets
 Ibuprofen (Advil) in 200 mg tablets (some French authorities report they can aggravate Coronavirus; US experts  disagrees)
 Mucinex®, Robitussin® or any cough medicine of choice
 Tissues
 Humidifier: if you have one, or run a hot shower and breathe in the steam.
 If you or a family member has asthma, ensure a prescription inhaler available for use.
 For a fever over 101, alternate Tylenol and Advil so you’re taking a dose of one or the other every 3 hours. (Again, check with your doctor before taking Advil.)
 Use both cough suppressants and expectorants (most cough meds have both).
 Drink a ton water! Stay hydrated before during and after!
 Rest, don’t fret. Keep pleasant people nearby

Know this…

If you’re sick, you should not be leaving your house except to go to the doctor. (From KHOU: Many doctors and insurance companies offer online options for treatment. This is a good thing to check on in advance) The federal government is, recommending  TeleHealth )

You DO NOT NEED TO GO TO THE ER unless you are having trouble breathing or your fever is very high and un-managed with meds.  We don’t want to clog the ERs unless you’re actually in distress. The hospital beds will be used for people who need oxygen/breathing treatments/IV fluids. If you have a pre-existing lung condition (COPD, emphysema, lung cancer) or are on immunosuppressants, now is a great time to talk to your PCP or specialist about what they would like you to do if you get sick. They might have plans to get you admitted and bypass the ER entirely.

For parents

One major relief to parents is that kids do VERY well with Coronavirus— they usually bounce back in a few days, no one under 18 has died, and almost no kids have required hospitalization (unless they have a lung disease like CF). Just use pediatric dosing of the same meds mentioned above.

Additional advice
If someone in your family has Coronavirus, they should: Stay in a separate room, use a separate bathroom, if possible; use paper plates and plastic utensils or different dishes and flatware then everyone else…by Linda Vaughn
