*Can one kid win it all, in the face of epic challengers in the ring?
“The Main Event,” follows an 11-year-old boy (Seth Carr) who discovers a magical mask and enters a competition to become the next WWE superstar. With the support of his grandmother (Tichina Arnold), he will do whatever it takes to achieve his dream.
EUR correspondent Fahnia Thomas chatted with Arnold about the Netflix comedy, streaming today.
Q: What would your wrestler name be?
TA: G-Ma if it were my character. T-Time would be mine! Not the kind of tea you [sip] but [me]!
Q: How much wrestler did you watch before filming “The Main Event?”
TA: As a kid my Saturday mornings consisted of our mother kicking us out of the bed. She would be like, ‘get up I have to clean! If you’re going to sit here stay out of my way!’ So we would have our breakfast, sit on the couch and watch wrestling, kung fu and “Soul Train.” That was our Saturday! It was “Rowdy” Roddy Piper and André the Giant. André was the one that got me interested in watching wrestling. I was like there’s no way there’s a human this big. He wasn’t even doing anything. He would just take people and throw them! I was a little girl in that era so it brings back a lot of nostalgia. Wrestling and filming “The Main Event” was personal because it allowed me to be a little kid.
Q: What was it like working with Seth?
TA: Seth is the consummate professional. He’s so mild-mannered and very soft-spoken. When he talks you have to lean in and hear what he’s saying. I’m loud so whenever he talked I put my ear close to him.
“The Main Event” drops on Netflix April 10th.
Carr plays Leo, a smallish in stature young man, who has a couple of good friends but is taunted by the middle school class bullies. He is convinced that he’s powerless to stop them. A bit nerdy with a passion for wrestling, and dreams of WWE stardom, Leo finds a supernatural costume that creates his alter ego, Kid Chaos. Using the mask, he enters the WWE NXT contest, easily defeating his opponents, and is soon heralded as a real contender, flattening the competition.
