*Police in a Louisiana parish were using the terrifying siren from the 2013 dystopian film “The Purge” to announce the start of a citywide curfew, until they realized where the siren sound originated and its cinematic intention.

Residents of Acadia Parish are under a nightly curfew and unable to leave the house from 9pm to 6am.

The Crowley Police Department decided it was a good idea to have squad cars drive around blasting the eerie alarm through empty streets. In the movie, the siren signals the start of the annual “purge,” which makes all types of crime legal for 12 hours.

Police officials told KATC that the siren’s origin was not made clear to them before its use on city streets, adding that they would not use any siren going forward.

Listen to the department’s siren below.
