Def Comedy Jam Returns TONIGHT with Coronavirus Facebook Fundraiser

On This Day In Comedy... In 1992 'Russell Simmons's Def Comedy Jam ...

*“Def Comedy Jam” is to return for the first time since 1997 with the special “Healing Through Laughter,” a stand-up show to help raise funds for protective equipment for “workers and people in vulnerable and underserved communities” struggling with the pandemic.

The show — which aired on HBO from 1992 to 1997 — will be revived as a Facebook livestream event TONIGHT, Sunday (April 5) and will be live-streamed on Facebook and Twitch from 7pm Pacific/10pm ET (3am GMT). Cedric the Entertainer is set to host and he’ll be joined by the show’s original DJ, Kid Capri.

Besides Ceddy Ced, the special event will feature some big names including Chris Rock, Dave Chapelle, Mike Epps, Chris Tucker and more.

About the event, Def Jam co-founder Russell Simmons told AllHipHop.com:

“We’re producing a show, a lot of technology, and to put it on Instagram, and we want to raise money for tools for essential workers.”

He added:

“People don’t realize how important masks are. And people are delivering food to the homeless, and to the elderly, people working in the pharmacy, people are riding the bus. They’re not being talked about, but they’re spreading the virus.”

Simmons also wants you to know that 100 percent of the profits from the event would go to essential workers and people in underprivileged communities, with the focus on Queens, Brooklyn and Philadelphia’s Logan area.
