Willow Smith Lives in Glass Box for 24 Hours as Part of ‘Anxiety’ Visual Art Performance

*Willow Smith has locked herself inside a glass box as part of a 24-hour art installation with friend and collaborator, Tyler Cole, for a performance happening at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the exhibit, titled “The Anxiety,” will see Smith and Cole live in a small box with one of its walls made of glass so that onlookers can spend a maximum of 15-minute watching them visually enact the eight stages of anxiety: paranoia, rage, sadness, numbness, euphoria, strong interest, compassion and acceptance.

“We might grunt or scream — it’s going to be very primal,” said Smith.

Willow and Tyler will not interact with viewers, and will take two-minute breaks to eat, sleep, and use the bathroom, the report states.

Smith and Cole posted the exhibit’s flyer on social, with the event being described as, “A personification of the emotional spectrum within the human mind through performance art.”

In addition to “The Anxiety” art exhibit, the duo will drop an alternative rock/punk album on March 13 under the same name. Smith insists the art installation is not a publicity stunt to promote the album.

“This is not so that people are like, ‘Oooh!’ This is for awareness,” she explained to The Times. Three parts of the box will be composed of canvass, on which Willow and Tyler will paint and write affirmative messages. “The first thing we’re going to be writing on our title wall is something along the lines of: ‘The acceptance of one’s fears is the first step toward understanding.’ So then you know this is on something real. This is for a real cause,” she added.

Willow also noted that the inspiration for the art show came while working on the album.

“We were like, ‘Wouldn’t it be so interesting if we could personify this experience? Starting from being scared and feeling alone and moving to a place of acceptance and joy?” she said. “We understand this is a very sensitive subject. And we don’t want to be like, ‘Our experience is the experience.’ This is just us expressing our personal experience with this.”

Smith and Cole’s performance art exhibit will take place at MOCA’s Geffen Contemporary starting Wednesday at 9 p.m. through Thursday at 9 p.m.
