Outrage Over Execution of Death Row Inmate Nathaniel Woods for Murders He Did Not Commit

Nathaniel Woods

*Social media is outraged over the execution of a Birmingham man who was sentenced to die for being an accomplice to the murder of three police officers.

Nathaniel Woods, 43, was pronounced dead at 9:01 p.m. on Thursday after an execution that lasted 15 minutes, according to PEOPLE. He was put to death amid a slew of appeals and protests from supporters,  who noted that Woods was not responsible for taking the lives of Birmingham police officers Charles Bennett; Carlos “Curly” Owen and Harley Chisholm III

The officers were killed on June 17, 2004 with a semi-automatic rifle while attempting to serve a warrant at a drug house where Woods was living with his roommate Kerry Spencer.

Spencer reportedly pulled the trigger, but prosecutors say Woods came up with the idea to ambush and murder the officers. He was convicted of capital murder in 2005 and sentenced to death.

Woods’ attorney argued that he didn’t deserve the harsh sentence as Spencer had confessed to the crime.

Spencer was also sentenced to death.

“Nate will die for a crime another man confessed to and says Nate had nothing to do with. My heart and prayers are with Nate and his family and all the advocates who worked tirelessly to save his life,” Kim Kardashian West tweeted.

Following his execution Thursday night, she was among the wave of supporters on social media mourning Woods’ death.

“My heart and prayers are with Nate and his family and all the advocates who worked tirelessly to save his life,” Kardashian wrote.

As Woods was being executed on Thursday, several across social media expressed their disappointment in the criminal justice system.

Earlier on Thursday, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas signed a stay of execution order, noting that Woods’ execution would not proceed “pending further order of the undersigned or of the Court.”

However, the Supreme Court denied to further review Woods’ case and the stay was lifted.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey also announced she had no plans to stop the execution.

Kardashian shared a copy of Ivey’s letter, along with the caption: “The court has lifted the temporary stay of execution for #NathanielWoods. The governor will NOT save his life. My heart and prayers are with Nate and his family. This is a tragic example of injustice in the system — in a few minutes Nate may die for a crime he did not commit,” she Tweeted.

Activist Martin Luther King III has also spoken out tweeting, “In the case of Nathaniel Woods, the actions of the U.S. Supreme Court and the Governor of the State of Alabama are reprehensible, and have potentially contributed to an irreversible injustice. It makes a mockery of justice and constitutional guarantees to a fair trial.”
