eBay Prohibits Sellers From Listing Kobe Bryant Memorial Souvenirs

Kobe Bryant

*Several people who attended the Kobe Bryant memorial at Staples Center on Monday are now seeking to cash in by selling souvenir items from the event online.

Via TMZ:

We’ve already found a handful of listings on eBay from people selling their memorial pins, shirts and other items. Most of the listers claim they personally attended the event.

The average starting bid for the Kobe Memorial bundles are around $3,000 — with a $5,000 “Buy It Now” price.

One seller listed an official Kobe shirt (size XL) from the memorial — and after receiving 76 bids, it sold for $2,025!

But hold up, eBay has announced that it is working to remove all the items from the site.

Programs handed out to mourners at the event are being sold for hundreds of dollars on eBay. The program features personal family photos of the Bryant family, including ones of Kobe and 12-year-old Gianna, who died along with seven others in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, Calif., on Jan. 26.

Attendees at the memorial also received pins and shirts, which have been bundled with ticket stubs and listed on eBay.

As it turns out, however, eBay has a policy that prohibits sellers from profiting off of “human tragedy or suffering,” TMZ reports.

The company sent the following message to one seller:

“Please note, due to sudden and tragic passing of Kobe Bryant – eBay has made the decision to prohibit the sale of merchandise, images and mugs relating to their passing.”

“We do not allow listings that attempt to profit from human tragedy or suffering.”

Most fans were able to get tickets to the memorial by entering a random drawing, with the money going to the Mamba & Mambacita Sports Foundation.

Michael Jordan gave a moving speech at the emotional memorial about his bond with Kobe.

“What Kobe Bryant was to me was the inspiration that someone truly cared about the way either I played the game or the way that he wanted to play the game. He wanted to be the best basketball player that he could be. And as I got to know him, I wanted to be the best big brother that I could be,” a tearful Jordan said onstage. .

“To do that, you have to put up with the aggravation, the late-night calls, or the dumb questions. I took great pride as I got to know Kobe Bryant that he was just trying to be a better person – a better basketball player. We talked about business, we talked about family, we talked about everything. And he was just trying to be a better person.

“Now, he’s got me and I’ll have to look at another crying meme,” Jordon joked about the popular meme of him crying during his 2009 Basketball Hall of Fame induction speech.
