Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY Sets Election-Themed ‘For the People’ Movie Marathon

Films Examining Democracy and Politics from a Global Cinematic Lens, Directed by People of Color and Women Will Be Screened For the Public at ARRAY’s Amanda Cinema

*Ava DuVernay’s multi-platform media company and arts collective ARRAY is launching an election-themed movie marathon on March 3, Super Tuesday, to amplify the Presidential Primary election and to highlight the importance of citizens using their voting power during this important election year.

The screenings will be held at ARRAY’s Amanda Cinema at the ARRAY Creative Campus in Historic Filipinotown section of Los Angeles. Tickets for all screenings are free and open to the public and are available at www.arraynow.com.

Voter registration forms will also be available onsite for attendees who would like to register.

The “For the People” movie marathon will feature five dynamic films from a global cinema lens directed by people of color and women that examine democracy and politics from diverse perspectives. The eclectic group of directors are Oscar-winner Alfonso Cuarón, Saudi Arabia’s first female director, Haifaa al-Mansour, trailblazing filmmaker Madeline Anderson, the first Black woman to produce and direct a televised documentary film, and award-winning Italian documentary filmmaker Gillo Pontecorvo.

The film slate is curated by Mercedes Cooper, Director of Programming, ARRAY Alliance, the non-profit organization founded by Ava DuVernay in 2018. Ms. Cooper is available for interviews.

Nearly 400 poorly paid black women hospital workers in Charleston, South Carolina go on strike to demand union recognition and a wage increase. *50th Anniversary*

CHILDREN OF MEN (dir. Alfonso Cuarón, 2006, 114min, Narrative)

When infertility threatens mankind with extinction, a disillusioned journalist becomes an unlikely champion in the fight for human survival.

THE BATTLE OF ALGIERS (dir. Gillo Pontecorvo, 1965, 121min, Narrative)

A recreation of the events that took place in the capital city of French Algeria between November 1954 and December 1957, during the Algerian War of Independence.

THE PERFECT CANDIDATE (dir. Haifaa al-Mansour, 2019, 104min, Narrative)

A determined young Saudi doctor inadvertently runs for local political office and her family and community struggle to accept their town’s first female candidate.
