THE REAL: Weinstein’s Conviction is Not the End for the #MeToo Fight

*On Tuesday, Feb. 25, on “The Real,” Harvey Weinstein’s conviction on two charges in his sexual assault case is on everyone’s mind. Co-host Amanda Seales wants everyone to realize that although it is a victory for the prosecution, the fight continues for women who have been assaulted. Co-host Tamera Mowry-Housley also gives props to the women who testified in the Weinstein trial.

The ladies also discuss the memorial held yesterday for Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna and the others who died in the tragic helicopter crash last month. Vanessa Bryant’s strength when speaking about her late husband and daughter is the topic on everyone’s mind, and Tamera explains the process of grief and how her heart goes out to Vanessa.

Co-host Jeannie Mai tells a “hair raising” story about losing an extension on an airplane!

And actress Jerrika Hinton stops by to talk about her show, Hunters. She also shares her experiences with therapy, and has some ideas about what can be done to end the stigma among people of color.

The Harvey Weinstein Conviction Is Not The End For The #MeToo Fight

Amanda Seales: I think these degrees of rape are always… I’m going to use the word “fascinating,” but that’s very generous. Like this idea, “Well, it wasn’t pre-meditated,” or “You know, it just kind of happened.” I think at the end of the day, it’s like, you were violated. Period. End of story.

[The Real audience applauds]

Amanda: Whether someone planned it or didn’t, you still have to carry on with that…

[EDIT]

Amanda: I think the biggest concern for me is that this was very highly-publicized and I think sometimes when there’s “justice” in a highly-publicized case it makes people feel like, “Well! We worked it out now! Everything’s handled!” It’s like Obama being President. Like, “Well! Racism’s done now! Everything’s handled!” It’s like no, the fight still continues…

Adrienne Houghton: 100%.

Amanda: Women still have difficulty being able to speak up – just people in general who suffer sexual assault have difficulty speaking up in our society, and I just appreciate Tarana Burke, who said, “And though today a man has been found guilty, we have to wonder whether anyone will care about the rest of us tomorrow. This is why we say MeToo.”

[The Real audience applauds]

Tamera Mowry-Housley: And I have to give props to the women who actually testified.

Adrienne: Yeah.

Tamera: I just wanted to say their names because you have to imagine what they were going through. They had to relive those moments…

Adrienne: The fear.

Tamera: …because they have to tell, you know, all the details, in front of, you know, the witnesses, in front of these people. So I just want to give a shout out to Annabella Sciorra, Miriam Haley, Jessica Mann, Dawn Dunning, Tarale Wulff and Lauren Marie Young. If they can do it…

Adrienne: We applaud you!

Tamera: You can do it.
