THE REAL: On Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union’s Bravery In Sharing Zaya’s Story

*On Monday, Feb. 24, the hosts of “The Real” talk about the criticism and comments Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union have received since revealing their daughter Zaya is transgender.

Co-host Jeannie Mai shares her feelings that Dwyane and Gabrielle did a brave and important thing by sharing Zaya’s news.

The ladies wonder whether people should feel guilty for listening to R. Kelly’s music. Co-host Tamera Mowry-Housley feels that his songs came from a sexual place and they make her uncomfortable. Jeannie agrees and says that when it comes to Bill Cosby or Harvey Weinstein’s work, their crimes happened behind the scenes.  Co-hosts Amanda Seales and Loni Love agree that everyone has the choice to listen to R. Kelly’s music on their own, but it shouldn’t be played in public.

The hosts discuss Rihanna’s speech at the NAACP Image Awards, encouraging people of color to tell friends of different races to “pull up.” Adrienne explains that people shouldn’t just be allies in public – they need to be allies in private as well.

And actor Mike Colter stops by to talk about Evil, and what being a #GirlDad means to him!

Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union Did A Brave And Important Thing, Sharing Zaya’s Story With The World

Loni Love: Black people have been very conservative about LGBTQ. We hide it.

Amanda Seales: Yeah, absolutely.

Loni: We go every Sunday morning, we see the gay, um, music choir…

Amanda: Choir director!

Loni: And we try to act like he’s not gay. I mean, seriously. And you know what? It’s a lack of education. And what we’re being forced to see, and thank you to Dwyane and Gabrielle for being so brave, because there is no education –

Amanda: Thank you to Zaya for being so brave!

Loni: Exactly!

[The Real audience applauds]

Loni: Because they’re very public! But there is no education about sexuality. And that’s why people are confused. In my opinion! I feel when people don’t know something and they’re confused about it, that’s when they shun it.

Adrienne Houghton: And they say ignorant statements!

Loni: And they make jokes about it! And it’s not a joke about somebody’s sexuality! It’s time for us to stand up and start realizing that we need to understand sexuality and that it’s ok…

Amanda: Gender…

Loni: And gender!

Jeannie Mai: Gender.

Jeannie: When it comes to the Wades, they did a very beautiful demonstration of what their job as a parent is. 1 – Listen…

Adrienne: The Wades can speak because on it because it’s their children – everyone else cannot.

Jeannie: …Listen and believe your child, #2, This is our daughter. Had they kept this inside of their home, they would have sent a terrible, and many times, traumatic message to their daughter that we are embarrassed of your existence in public.

[The Real audience applauds]

Jeannie: So that’s really important.

[EDIT]

Amanda: Zaya, to me, is a beautiful example of how important it is for you to know thyself. And for you to encourage that in your child from an early age. At any point in time, Zaya might be like, “You know what? I want you to call me Zaire now.” And it’s like, that shouldn’t be a problem. And for rappers to be having the issue with this, it’s like, we calling you out your name all the daggone time!

[The Real audience applauds]

Jeannie: Yo, yo.

Loni: I know. And –

Jeannie: And another thing I just want to say really quick –

Loni: OK.

Jeannie: – that I hear a lot, because I’m a proud follower and lover of Jesus. And people say that God doesn’t make mistakes. Just because Zaya doesn’t fit into your understanding of gender doesn’t mean that Zaya is a mistake. God didn’t make a mistake. The mistake is us trying to put Zaya and trans people into a limited understanding of what gender is. So please note that God does not make mistakes.

Loni: OK.

Amanda: Ain’t nothing Christian about bullying.
