ADOS Co-founder Defends Org’s Controversial Stance on Black Immigrants – WATCH

*ABC News recently had in its programming, a controversial interview that begs the question – do Black immigrants have the same experiences as Black Americans, who are, for the most part, the descendants of slaves?

A cauldron of heated debate in the Black community, according to ABC News, the debate “ignited” after Cynthia Erivo, an English actress, singer and songwriter played Harriet Tubman, for which she garnered an Oscar nomination.

The American Descendants of Slavery (ADOS), an organization founded by Yvette Carnell and Antonio Moore, is at the center of the controversy.

Carnell, an alumnus of Howard University is the host of the political show “Breaking Brown.” Moore, an alumnus of UCLA and an attorney, hosts a YouTube show called “Tonetalks.”

The organization, according to its website (www.ados101.com), “seeks to reclaim/restore the critical national character of the African American identity and experience, one grounded in our group’s unique lineage, and which is central to our continuing struggle for social and economic justice in the United States.”

In the ABC video, posted above, Carnell had strong feelings about Erivo playing the role of Harriet Tubman, a central figure in the history of African Americans.

“If Harriet was a part of your experience as an ADOS you could bring it to that role,” said Carnell. When asked if the “American” part of the Black experience in America was important to ADOS, Carnell had a pointed response. “I think it’s essential,” she said. “We built the richest country in the world. We’ve always been very giving, very accepting of Black immigrants to this country, we always have. But it’s a problem when you look at the number of these roles, especially lead roles which are going to other groups and other people, even though we fought for the opportunity to be in those roles.”

Several stars have weighed in on the controversy, including actor Samuel Jackson, featured in the segment. This debate has been an ongoing debate in the Black community and surely, the Harriet Tubman role by Cynthia Erivo, has once again, stirred the pot of debate in the Black community.
