Weekend Watch: Heed ‘The Call of the Wild’ (VIDEO)

*If you’re looking for great family fun, heed “The Call of the Wild.” The adaptation of the classic coming of age story of Buck and his journey is exciting entertainment.

Viewers go on an adventure of a lifetime without even leaving home. Buck uprooted from his California home and transplanted to the exotic wilds of the Alaskan Yukon during the Gold Rush of the 1890s. There he meets up with musher postal workers Perrault (Omar Sy) and  Francois (Cara Gee).

Pointing out how important their jobs are Sy says, “We don’t just carry the mail. We carry lives.” They also carry the burden of being guardians to Buck. Sy went on to say they are Buck’s “parents.”

Eventually, John Thornton (Harrison Ford) becomes Buck’s master and they help each other. In a scene where Buck attempts to curb his excessive drinking, Buck throws away one of John’s liquor bottles in “The Call of the Wild.” A grieving father who settled in the Yukon explored the territory with Buck. Ford’s role reminds me of the story John Boyega told when in New York promoting “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

Boyega spoke of Ford’s adventurous nature. “During filming, Harrison told me he really wanted to go somewhere different to eat. I told him he had to ditch security and we went to a favorite restaurant of mine in the neighborhood I grew up in. We had Nigerian food and he was ordering everything, African, Caribbean. People were star struck but we just had a normal meal and it was fun.”

Directed by Chris Sanders, “The Call of the Wild” also stars Bradley Whitford, Michael Horse, Jean Louisa Kelly, Colin Woodell, and Adam Fergus.
