White Man Who Fatally Shot Unarmed Black Man in Parking Lot Dispute is ‘Attacked in Prison’

*Michael Drejka, the white man who fatally shot 28-year-old Markeis McGlockton, an unarmed black man, after starting an argument over a disabled parking space with McGlockton’s girlfriend in July 2018, has been attacked in prison by a fellow inmate.

Drejka, 49, who is serving 20 years for manslaughter for the shooting death of McGlockton in Clearwater, Florida, was attacked by a fellow inmate on Tuesday afternoon and sustained a head injury requiring five stitches, his wife told reporters. She claims Drejka fears for his life and believes he was targeted, Daily Mail reports.

Florida Department of Corrections confirmed the incident went down inside Lancaster Correctional Institution and said Drejka has since been separated from other inmates.

The Florida Department of Corrections said Drejka “was involved in an isolated incident with another inmate” that took place at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday and that “the situation was brought under control by institution security staff.”

Corrections officials have not disclosed details of the attack or identify the other inmate who issued the beat down.

The agency said correctional officers were “diligent in their efforts to search inmates and common areas to eradicate weapons and unauthorized property.”

Drejka’s defense attorney, John Trevena, called the lack of details in the statement “laughable,” per tampabay.com.  The Department of Corrections, he said, “is incredibly inept at protecting inmates.”

“There are frequent attacks and beatings resulting in inmate injury and sometimes death,” Trevena said. “Sometimes the correctional officers are complicit in these attacks.”

Defense attorney Bryant Camareno told The Associated Press that his client had the impression he was targeted by someone.

“No one deserves to be treated like that,” Camareno told Fox 13 News

“The Constitution demands that inmates be protected and so we’re not necessarily pointing the fingers at anyone just yet. But it’s very important that all inmates, regardless of what they’ve been convicted of, be protected. They’re afforded that right: freedom from cruel and unusual punishment,” he added.

During his trail for McGlockton murder, Drejka used the controversial Florida Stand Your Ground law in his defense despite CCTV footage showing that the victim was backing away from the gun.
