THE REAL Hosts Discuss Gymnasts Being Referred to As ‘Scantily Clad,’ and Welcome Joy Bryant and Ravi Patel!

*On Tuesday, Feb. 11, the hosts of “The Real” discuss the sportscaster who referred to gymnasts as “scantily clad girls.” Is there a double standard for the way men and women refer to athletes? Co-host Adrienne Houghton believes there is, and co-host Amanda Seales discusses the deeper issues of the gymnastics world.

Have you asked your partner to change his facial hair or grooming? Co-host Loni Love has decided that boyfriend James is keeping his beard, no matter what, and she has an Instagram poll to back her up!

And actress Joy Bryant stops by to discuss her new show, For Life. She talks about how she didn’t need to go far to talk to women about standing by their incarcerated men, and what it was like to work with producer 50 Cent again.

Later, actor Ravi Patel visits to talk about his movie Come As You Are, and talks about his best family road trip story!

The Hosts On The Sportscaster Who Referred To Gymnasts As “Scantily Clad”

Tamera Mowry-Housley: It was out of context. You know, we’re watching – being a gymnast – I mean, it was a sport. So I don’t think – have we ever heard a woman, a sports newscaster while we’re watching football say, “Oh look at those hot guys, and look how hot, you know, their butts look.” I feel like, to me, he felt a little bit too comfortable. He forgot where he was.

Loni Love: Don’t drink and broadcast!

[The Real audience applauds]

Adrienne Houghton: I just think that from a journalistic standpoint, it was wildly tacky.

Tamera: Yeah.

Adrienne: It was wildly tacky.

Loni: That’s locker room talk.

Adrienne: It’s locker room talk for sure. It’s wildly tacky, but I also think that when we talk about sexism, it can’t lean one way or another, and I think if we’re being honest, most of us would not have such a hard issue – it’d be like [laughs] if a woman was like, “Damn, they look – baseball players look good in their tight pants!” It would not be like, “Get her off the air! She has been…” It does lean one way more than the other and we have to be honest about that.

Loni: Yeah it was just – I don’t think he should be fired. He apologized.

Adrienne: It’s tacky.

Loni: He realized. I mean, you know – he was feeling good. You know, that’s what happens sometimes, you’re feeling good!

Tamera: He forgot where he was!

Adrienne: He forgot.

Loni: Yeah, he forgot where he was!

Amanda Seales: He’s in the booth…

Tamera: With the guys…

Amanda: He’s in the booth… they were just talking…

Adrienne: I’m just curious, from a gymnast standpoint, and when you’re looking at it from an athletic level, and I also want to hear from Jeannie, just particularly because you said it’s offensive, do you think it’s offensive if a man stands on the statement of, “I find gymnast women very sexy.”

Amanda: I mean, I think it becomes sketchy simply because so many of gymnasts – so many gymnasts are on the younger side than the elder side.

Loni: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Amanda: Especially in the wake of the Larry Nasser horrible, traumatic experience that so many gymnasts have had. You know what I mean? So I feel like that…

Adrienne: Yeah, that’s what I’m saying, I want to speak deeper into it because I feel like it goes – it goes deeper than just what he said.

Amanda: But on the flip, they in college. These are – these are like women in college. And they – on the flip! Oh! Pun intended! I think that to me is why I’m like – eh. Because college space in general is just more free space.

Fresh points of view, youthful energy and passion have made THE REAL a platform for multicultural women. Produced by Telepictures Productions and distributed by Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, THE REAL is led by Executive Producer, Rachel Miskowiec (Good Morning America, Katie, The Tyra Banks Show, Judge Hatchett, The Ricki Lake Show) and shot in Los Angeles, California.

Then, in honor of The Real’s upcoming 1000th episode, the ladies take some time to reminisce about one of their most outrageous moments and view a Season One clip where they demonstrated how to use leftover party foods in their beauty regimen!
