New York City, NY — Justice for Black Americans past and present, as seen through the eyes and personal experiences of three historical and mobilizing figures in Black History—Harriet Tubman, Emmett Till and Medgar Evers—is being examined in a powerful new film by New York-based playwright and new filmmaker, Chad Lawson Cooper.

Cooper is a director, actor, screenwriter, recording artist and playwright best known for the national stage play, “Church Mess,” which toured to over 100 cities. The film is a sequel to and visual adaptation of the play, “Justice on Trial, Black Lives Matter, Too.” Cooper was inspired to write the story after the unjustified shooting death of Philando Castile, an unarmed black man who was killed by a police officer in Minnesota, in front of his fiancé and daughter in 2016.  The police officer was acquitted of murder charges. The theater production has played to packed houses in New York off Broadway, and in a number of cities in the South and the West Coast.

The movie, which was filmed in Macon and Atlanta, GA.,  is being presented by Justice on Trial: The Movie 20/20, LLC., in conjunction with The Chad Cooper Company (TCCC) on Broadway; Burke Management of Beverly Hills; Metro Wealth Films of Atlanta, and Andrea Holmes Thompkins, producer and CEO of ACE Media in New York.

” Justice On Trial: The Movie 20/20, shines a critical light on the historical injustices and atrocities that have been prevalent against Black people in the past and that are still being committed against us today,” shared Cooper.  “The movie involves two civil rights attorneys who  initiated a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice for reparations and damages committed against African Americans, and brings back time-traveling witnesses (Tubman, Evers and Till) to testify. The evidence is then given to a culturally-diverse jury to deliberate,” he said.

Justice On Trial: The Movie 20/20 features Actor Todd Bridges, best known from the iconic television series “Different Strokes,” and Dorien Wilson, known for his role as the skittish love interest in the popular sitcom “Monique.” The film also showcases the acting talents of the movie’s screenwriter,  Chad Lawson Cooper ; his wife, Alicia Robinson Cooper (Harriet Tubman); David Arquilla (Attorney Hong); Lane Harper (Medgar Evers); and Chad Lawson Cooper, III (Emmett Till). In addition, the film includes appearances by gospel singing group Soul Tempo, who were featured in The Preacher’s Wife, starring Denzel Washington and Whitney Houston.

In honor of Black History Month, TCCC has partnered with over 250 churches nationwide, to provide a venue for their congregations and the local communities to experience the movie and have discussions.   The thought-provoking film will also be shown in limited release at select AMC theaters around the country.

“The unfortunate truth is that racism is as alive today as it ever was and our goal through this film, is to not only educate younger generations about our nation’s troubled history, which is still very much part of our present, but to also instill pride and hope in young African Americans about their culture’s accomplishments,”  Cooper shared.  “We also want to inspire hope for their future and bring people of all ages, races and cultures into a more sincere social consciousness and conversation, so we can find a resolution to this insidious madness,” he said.

Justice on Trial: The Movie 20/20, will have its first premiere showing in Atlanta on Sunday, February 16 at the Porter Sanford Performing Arts Center, located at 3181 Rainbow Drive in Decatur,  and will include a VIP red carpet event featuring  locally and nationally known celebrities and community influencers from entertainment, politics, civic, business, sports, etc.

A brief panel discussion featuring noted community influencers will also be held after the film showing.  Scheduled panelists include Cooper; Hank Stewart, renowned poet laureate, youth advocate and founder of The Hank Stewart Foundation; Lubbie Harper, Jr., retired Supreme Court Justice; John Gesmonde, a prominent trial lawyer and actor playing one of the civil rights lawyers in the film and Tamara Sheeley, candidate for U.S. Senate whose campaign is based on reparations, who will serve as the panel discussion facilitator.
