Amanda Seales Agrees with Jay-Z & Beyonce’s National Anthem ‘Statement’ – WATCH

*On Monday, February 3, “The Real hosts discuss the big game this weekend and the controversy that Jay-Z and Beyoncé spawned by remaining seated through the National Anthem.

Co-host Amanda Seales supports the couple’s decision to quietly protest the tradition, explaining that the statement is not about the NFL, but in line with former player Colin Kaepernick’s call to end police brutality and the racist undertones of the song.

Amanda Seales: For what it’s worth, they weren’t kneeling. Um, and the other part of it is, like, I know me I don’t stand for the National Anthem, either. But also, they’re not in the game. Like, they’re not players in the game. I think that what Colin did was great. I think that the ghost of Colin Kaepernick didn’t let the Niners win.

(The Real hosts and audience laugh)

Amanda: But I, ya know, for what it’s worth, like, black folk for centuries have found ways- you know, we deal with micro-aggressions and we found ways to have micro-revolutions. And someone- and something of this nature… Their status, doing this on camera? Like, it is a statement. So, I feel like it was an opportunity for Colin to say, like, “I’m glad y’all are…” Even if to say, like, “I’m glad you had a change of heart. Maybe.” You know?

Adrienne Houghton: Ah.

Amanda: But, I love this.

Adrienne: You think it was a statement.

Amanda: It is a statement.

Jeannie Mai: It is a statement. Yeah.

Loni Love: Yeah. They not standing.

Amanda: Jay is not a loose-minded person. Like, that is a statement.

Jeannie: They weren’t, like, tired. That def- They weren’t tired and wanted a break.

Adrienne: Do you think it was okay to say we can support the NFL and still sit down? Was that the statement?

Tamera Mowry-Housley: That’s the question.

Amanda: I think “The Star-Spangled Banner” is not about the NFL. I think that even Colin Kaepernick’s protest wasn’t about the NFL and it wasn’t about “The Star-Spangled Banner”. It was about police brutality.

(The Real audience applauds)

Amanda: So, you know, for the record, “The Star-Spangled Banner” has racist references in it, as well. So, even to say that I don’t want to support that, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that, either. But, I think Beyoncé and Jay have proven over and over again that they’re artists and that they have a lot of stake and a lot of influence. And, so, this was powerful.
