*The late-great John Witherspoon was reportedly set to reprise two of his iconic roles before his untimely passing in October: Grandpa in Aaron McGruder’s forthcoming “The Boondocks” revival, and Ice Cube’s dad in the highly anticipated final installment of the “Friday” franchise.

Jenifer Lewis has volunteered to fill in for grandpa, and earlier this week, filmmaker Ice Cube provided an update about Witherspoon’s character while discussing the status of the film on Twitter.

When asked whether the project was still a go in light of Witherspoon’s death, the Big3 co-founder noted his frustration at the endless delays that are out of his control, The Root reports.

“Back to the drawing board since New Line Cinema was slow on green lighting the LAST FRIDAY script that was full of Mr. Jones,” Ice Cube  tweeted. “I’ve been pissed off about it since Spoon passed away.”

The hip-hop icon also noted that “New Line has the rights to distribute that movie,” when another fan asked if he could take the film to another studio.

“Friday” saw rapper Ice Cube in his first comic role, and centered on a day in the life of his character Craig Jones and his friend Smokey (Chris Tucker). 2000s “Next Friday” and 2002’s “Friday After Next” followed the same premise and featured new characters including Mike Epps played as Day-Day.

Witherspoon died in October at the age of 77 of fatal heart attack.
