THE REAL Welcomes Singer Michelle Williams and Author Michael Eric Dyson

*On Wednesday, Dec. 11, the hosts of The Real have opinions on the current rap battle going on between Eminem and Nick Cannon. A reporter in Georgia covering a race was groped by a passing runner and the ladies recall times someone touched them without their approval and how it made them feel.

Co-host Tamera Mowry-Housley recalls her past in beauty pageants and why she stopped participating in them, and the ladies discuss how amazing it is that the current Miss USA, Miss America, Miss Teen USA and Miss Universe are all women of color.

Then singer and actress Michelle Williams stops by to chat about appearing in the upcoming Pasadena Playhouse theatre production of A Snow White Christmas. She also reveals that she knew she wasn’t the favorite in Destiny’s Child – and she was ok with that!

And best-selling author, political commentator and academic Michael Eric Dyson visits to talk about his latest book, Jay-Z: Made in America, why he decided to write it, and which hip-hop artist he’d like to write about next!

The Ladies Recall Times When Someone Touched Them Without Their Approval

Tamera Mowry-Housley: I mean, I have, you know, I have tapped my children on their butt as they have started their soccer games, like a just, like, “Go get ‘em!” You know, just to encourage them, but again, those are my children, I know them…

Jeannie Mai: We do it to each other…

Tamera: We do it to each other…

Adrienne Houghton: There’s a comfortability there.

Tamera: But even if you do know someone, you have to ask for permission. Anyways.

[The Real audience applauds]

Jeannie: But you just are not allowed to touch another woman.

Adrienne: Or if you do, you can definitely be like, “Hey are you comfortable with us playing this way?”

Tamera: Yeah, “Are you comfortable with this?”

Adrienne: Yeah, for sure. I actually am so happy that this woman is taking this moment to speak out about this because growing up in New York, sadly, this was almost normalized in my generation, like if someone did that to you, you’re just like, Well, damn, I guess I gotta take the L, somebody slapped my butt. You get what I mean? I grew up in a generation where it’s just like, Well, now I’m embarrassed, and there goes that. But you didn’t come out and speak out it. So I think it’s so important that we support her in speaking out about this, because people now have to check themselves, check the way we think, check what we think is ok to do. If he thought this was funny? Like I’d love to hear what his defense is. Like, “Oh, I just thought it was…” No, it’s not ok!

Loni Love: Yeah, that’s what he said… he didn’t mean any harm.

Adrienne: It’s not all right! You know what I mean? Did anybody ever do this to you over something that made you feel uncomfortable and you’re just like, “Oh, I’m really uncomfortable, but I guess that’s just like…”

Tamera: Have you ever had men in, you know, being in the industry, you have executive producers, even people, you know, higher above that, actually hug you, and hug you a little bit too long?

Adrienne: Yes.

Tamera: You’re like, “Uhhh… ok! Stop!”

Jeannie: Yes. That’s… that’s happened.

Tamera: It’s not right. It’s uncomfortable.

Loni: That’s what we continue to fight.

Jeannie: And it’s awful because sometimes in that moment, you can either go that way of deer in headlights or god forbid you go the other way and lash out, and then something happens in return. That puts you in danger, so it’s really scary. Yo, keep your hands to yourself, like we don’t have to tell this!

[The Real audience applauds]

Jeannie: Like a national PSA!

Adrienne: Awareness!

Jeannie: You should know this by now!

Adrienne: Not ok.

Jeannie: But we got your back, girl.
