‘Little Women’ Stars On Vanity & Awards (Watch)

The eighth adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s novel “Little Women” hits theaters December 25.

EUR correspondent Fahnia Thomas talked to Greta Gerwig about her modern take on the period drama and chatted with stars Saoirse Ronan, Eliza Scanlen, Florence Pugh and Laura Dern about conceit and Hollywood.

Q: What piece of vanity can you not live without?

Florence Pugh: Rings! I have them on every single finger and when I lose them, I’m like, ‘Oh! My Gosh! Don’t look at my hands! And I’ll take my hands out of the conversation.

Laura Dern: I love a lip. It’s so my grandmother. I loved her freshly washed face and lipstick with no other makeup. That’s such a woman to me.

Saoirse Ronan: I wear this ring [touches ring on her finger] every single day. Somebody special gave it to me. I wear it all of the time. But also, I realized if I don’t put concealer on under my eyes I look like a corpse. I have to have concealer on all of the time or I look like a ghost.

Eliza Scanlen: With my newly short haircut…I need a comb! You don’t want to see me in the morning!

Greta Gerwig: I’ve always felt like, ‘OH! I need a full face mask!’ I couldn’t just feel comfortable with just being like, ‘this is me!’ So that’s vanity. I’ve seen [this] generation of people…there’s a trend of being okay with having some acne. Like it makes you look cool. I’ve seen runways where models have acne and they don’t cover it.

Q: Award season is amping up, what are your award season must-haves or rituals?

Saoirse Ronan: If you do go to an awards thing it’s always nice to bring a pal with you because it means you’re going to have fun even if you don’t win. It’s also a reminder that it’s a lovely thing but it’s not the whole world. You feel like it’s all about you. Like, ‘Oh, God!’ There’s all this pressure. But you forget about all of that when you’re with your buddy.

Greta Gerwig: It’s a tremendous honor to be in the conversation in this way. What’s amazing is getting to have roundtable [conversations] with different directors. [Because] when you write and direct a movie you’re kind of isolated from other writers and directors and getting to sit in a room and talk to a bunch of people is wonderful. It makes you feel like a community.
