*Chicago comedian Lil Rel Lowery, who grew to fame with his breakout role in Jordan Peel’s Get Out, is continuing his star streak with his new HBO comedy special “Lil Rel Howery: Live in Crenshaw.” Even though he has had much success in movies he was still yearning to reach his ultimate goal, a comedy special on HBO.
Lil Rel reflects on his childhood memories of being at his aunt’s house on the westside of Chicago and watching Def Comedy Jam. It was from that moment on he knew he wanted to be a comedian and be on HBO.
Our correspondent L.Marie spoke with Lil Rell at the LA screening (at Neuehouse in Hollywood) of his special and he expressed what the night meant to him.
“To go from like opening up at the Comedy Store and like that new faces thing, to like throwing a screening for your HBO special. It’s crazy yo.”
As you know from the title, the special was filmed in the Crenshaw district of Los Angeles. Most of the time when a comedian films a comedy special that is significant to them, they usually go to their home town, so we had to ask Lil Rel what made him film this in Crenshaw instead of Chicago.
“I felt like the community needed a laugh. Like when you watch this, watch how hard those people are laughing,” said Lil Rel.
The energy you’ll see when watching “Lil Rel Howery: Live in Crenshaw” is the same energy that was in the screening room. People sharing laughs and nodding their heads, because the jokes are not only funny but relatable.
During a Q&A with host Terrence J after the screening, Terrance J asked where Lil Rel got his inspiration for his jokes.
Lil Rel responds by saying the jokes are from real-life experiences. “I can take all these characters in my life and merge them into one thing,” says Lil Rel. Lil Rel Howery Live in Crenshaw is streaming now on HBO!
