Maya Rockeymoore Cummings Undergoes Double Mastectomy Surgery After Mother Dies from Breast Cancer [VIDEO]

*Maya Rockeymoore Cummings, widow of the late Congressman Elijah Cummings, underwent a double mastectomy at Johns Hopkins Hospital on Friday.

According to CBS News, she had the elective surgery planned for months after her mother passed away from breast cancer and her sister was recently diagnosed.

After taking time to rest and recoup, Cummings plans to hit the campaign trail, as she is running to fill Maryland’s 7th congressional district seat vacated by her husband. She announced her candidacy and surgery the same day.

Maya Rockerymoore Cummings“In the healthcare front, I want to talk about my own personal journey,” Cummings said. “Weeks, even months before running for Congress was ever a thought, I was already traumatized. In 2015, my mother died of stage four breast cancer. Last year, my sister was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer.”

Having a double mastectomy was something she decided on with both her late husband and her doctor.

“The date was scheduled long before he ever died, long before this ever happened,” Rockeymoore Cummings said

“Maya you always consider everybody else, I want you to take care of yourself,” she said her late husband told her about opting to have the preventative procedure.

“And so as a promise to him and as a promise to me, I am focused on making sure I’m healthy and well,” she said. “I’m going to move forward with having that surgery.”

The surgery recovery will take two to four weeks, time Rockerymoore Cummings intends to use to focus on raising money for her campaign.

“This is going to get down and dirty, but I’m ready for it,” she said.
