Lena Waithe Says ‘Queen & Slim’ is A Love Letter to Black People – WATCH

*The Universal Pictures film “Queen & Slim is a complex story layered with love, blackness, angst and social impact.

The screenplay was written and produced by Emmy winner Lena Waithe and stars Academy Award® nominee Daniel Kaluuya as “Slim” and Jodie Turner-Smith (Syfy’s Nightflyers), as “Queen” in her first starring role. The film is the directorial debut from Melina Matsoukas (executive producer/director of HBO’s Insecure)

The film begins as Slim and Queen are on their first date via Tinder in a cheap Ohio diner. The unremarkable evening takes an unexpected turn while Slim is dropping Queen off at home, a policeman pulls them over for a minor traffic violation. Queen – a lawyer – pulls out her phone as the situation escalates, which ends in Slim taking the officer’s gun and shooting him in self-defense.

The two strangers make the decision to leave the scene and go on the run. As they are attempting to navigate their way to freedom, dashboard-cam footage of the incident goes viral. The two soon become a symbol of anguish, blackness and trauma for many across the nation.

Waithe sat down with EURweb’s Jill Munroe to discuss how her first film is already emotionally connecting with audiences, why she chose to leave the two lead characters nameless for the majority of the film and what music would she have on her on the run soundtrack.

We want to be the best at our crafts, we want to try to master our crafts… we’re still in the process of doing it. It’s obviously the first feature for both of us (Matsoukas) we really went into it wanting to plant a flag… I didn’t want the film to feel polite. I didn’t want to be kind to an audience that people felt I should try to get, or make feel comfortable. It was really a love letter to us. It was me talking to black people, directly.

The film also features Bokeem Woodbone, Indya Moore (FX’s Pose,) Flea and Chole Sevigny.

“Queen and Slim” hits theaters November 27.
