Janelle Monáe Updates ‘The Siamese Cat Song’ for ‘Lady and the Tramp’ (Watch)

*Disney just launched its new streaming service Disney+ and fans are loving the nostalgia!

With a lot of legacy content, there’s also new content such as the live-action remake of the Disney classic “Lady and the Tramp.”

The star-studded cast features Tessa Thompson, Justin Theroux, and Janelle Monáe. Monáe is not only lending her voice for the character Peg, the Pekingese, but the film studio also wanted her involved with new songs on the film’s soundtrack.

EUR correspondent L. Marie sat down with the songstress, and co-songwriters Nate “Rocket” Wonder and Roman GianArthur, to talk about the challenges of changing original songs.

“We grew up watching the Siamese song. But we had the challenge of recreating that one,” shared Roman. Disney decided they wanted to make changes to “The Siamese Cat Song” because there are a few racist undertones in the song.

This version is very similar to the original and keeps classic moments like, the spaghetti scene we all love. The creator of the live-action romance brought an updated flare along with the updated music.

The songwriting trio also revamped another original song “He’s a Tramp” which is sung by Monáe’s character Peg after Lady gets taken into the pound. When asked if the team had any nerves about the way fans would react to the changes Rocket said no.

Janelle is an amazing singer,” he expressed. “And the song is a great song and so it’s just having a great singer sing a great song that’s pretty simple.”

The “Lady and the Tramp” adaption is streaming on Disney+ now, marking it the first Disney remake without a theatrical release.
