*Harriet Tubman‘s biopic has been released, and it was already known that several had called for a boycott prior to the release because of Comcast involvement with the film and the company’s current Supreme Court case involving the Civil Rights act of 1866. In addition, Cynthia Erivo a British Nigerian being caste instead of a African American was also seen as a major problem.
But no one could have expected the reactions after news of the plot came out. With the biggest issue being the ahistorical creation of a black male slave catcher villain that is entirely fictionalized. In fact there may be no case of any black male slave catchers existing period. The character “Bigger Long” curses, kills and generally chases black women throughout the film. In addition, the film creates a white savior out of Harriet Tubman’s slave owner who eventually kills Bigger Long. The hashtag #KASILEMMONSMOVIE is trending where people are making their own assessments of the Tubman director.
We really spent two days being scolded to accept a film that promotes the trope of the hyper-violent, hypersexual Black brute, by the very same people who used to tweet tearful threads about the death of Black men and boys at the hands of white police officers and vigilantes.

Defending the Harriet Tubman biopic is akin to defending Styron’s novel on Nat Turner, given the ideological work racism one of them does. And I could care less whether the architect of each is black or white or male or female.

I really hope people don’t see #Harriet and think it’s historically accurate. #NotMyHarriet #AfroChat pic.twitter.com/XP5FPMa1wM

Antonio Moore and Yvette Carnell creators of the national movement American Descendants of Slavery #ADOS gave a scathing critique of the film. Watch Below.
